Dance Across Triangular Borders – Video Statements

The following video statements by Tatiana Mejía, Sara Mikolai, Duduzile Voigts, Özlem Alkış, Gaya Dandara, Amanda Piña and Amelia Uzategui Bonilla.
were part of the video-installation presented as part of the Tanzplattform PLUS Rahmenprogramm of Tanzplattform Deutschland 2024 in Freiburg, conceptualized by Sandra Chatterjee.

The two day program panel program and video-installation DANCE ACROSS TRIANGULAR BORDERS – Processes of Decolonization in Contemporary Dance took the following as its starting point:

The contemporary dance scene in Germany (and in the global North) appears diverse: choreographers are constantly breaking new, idiosyncratic grounds and issues of discriminatory mechanisms and structures are negotiated on stage. At the same time, however, dynamics of discrimination and exclusion, racism (including hidden or unrecognized racism), dominance of white and Eurocentric perspectives and the reproduction of colonial images and modes of seeing are still omnipresent. Even the term “contemporary” often reveals itself as a Eurocentric construction in dance, which must be subjected to a critical, decolonizing analysis.

‘Dance Across Triangular Borders’ aims to focus critically on geopolitical, cultural and aesthetic power relations and privileges, to highlight decolonizing impulses, processes and practices and to bring them into dialogue. Perspectives from the global South, BIPOC, decolonizing and anti-racist approaches form the center of the discussions, which question visible and invisible borders and bring local and international artistic positions into an exchange.

The video-statements were created in response to the following prompt:

What questions do we as BIPOC – dance makers and organizers working in German-speaking contexts want to bring to the table, based on our practice as local BIPOC dance makers? What impulses do we propose to enter into dialogue about how racism and colonizing structures in dance can be counteracted?
